Default Found in a Buddhist temple in Zanskar...

This helmet was found in a Buddhist temple in Zanskar, Ladakh, in Northern India.

Inscription says "Horse Artillery". Could it be John Company?

All the best and thanks for any comments or ideas.

William

It is very well possible (or even most likely) that is of one of the presidency's Horse Artillery corps. Boris Mollo in "The Indian Army" (Blandford Books 1981) describes them and shows several pictures.

BTW, having visited Zankskar, I would be interested in knowing in which Gompa this was found.

It was at s’Tongde looking down on Padum, capital of Zanskar. There are two gompas there s’Tongde and Nyeri. Not sure which one this helmet was at. We’ll never know how it got there but it wasn't treated as very sacred!

Thanks again for your info.

You were there yourself?

I still think our visits and trekkings to Ladakh and Zanskar were very impressive.

This was from the visit of a friend to Ladakh.

Personally, I have worked, explored and travelled for many years all over the central Asia region, as far north as Tibet and Lhasa, and everywhere in between down through all of the Stans, Afghanistan and Western China. But I ain’t never been to Zanskar!
