Default The Army Bearer Corps

The A.B.C. over 1 title similar to one displayed in the J. L. Chapple collection.

Hello Jean-Paul,

I found the site below interesting reading.

https://militaryhealth.bmj.com/conte...6/685.full.pdf

I’m sure their are other Forum members with a greater knowledge about the A.B.C., and hopefully they may add something.

Cheers,

Nice find.

ABC was an Indian unit during WWI for purpose of Stretcher Bearers (i.e. carrying of wounded soldiers)

The bottom badge in the Chapple collection (I-B-C) is not for Army Bearer corps but is a South African WWI badge for the Indian Bearer Company of the South African Medical Corps and was used in East Africa.

Steven

Thanks Steven, I thought the A.B.C. title somewhat uncommon when I first saw it.

Where did you get the images of Chappelle's collection from and are there others available?

Hello Tim,

I was looking at images on Google when I came across the picture, so posted it here in its original form, and then cropped the second picture for more detail.

I didn't go looking for anything else regarding Chapple's collection, as the original picture had a representation of the A.B.C. over 1 title.

Cheers,

Invest

The Victoria Barracks museum in Sydney bought the Australian badges from the Chapelle collection in the 1970s. I attended a MHS meeting there soon after and I was able to see them.
There were some very nice early badges, including some pre-federation HPs, most of which are still in the collection. For reasons unknown, possibly a decision of the director, they send badges to other state army museums, and kept mainly NSW badges. They have made the collection available to various authors who have published badge books but it is not easy to get access these days as I don't think they are currently on public display.
