Default Another VC awarded

Looks like another VC has just been announced to a 1 Para soldier.

Victoria Cross awarded to lance corporal for Afghanistan rescue.

Lance Corporal Joshua Leakey VC.

I found the hug from CGS a bit disconcerting - not normal protocol. What's next a big Italian style kiss on both cheeks!

Yes, why isn't he presented with an actual VC medal instead of a hug?

Rgds, Thomas.

Because the "media aware" MOD press office see an opportunity for a photocall with an engineered event where the recipients from the latest Operational Honours List can get photographed and interviewed when they get a (meaningless) certificate and a handshake from the media managed brass.

The recipients - especially of the higher awards, and particularly L/Cpl Leakey, will not be 'given' their awards until they receive them from the hand of the Sovereign in a proper investiture - not a 'photo opportunity' which is what this is. (Lazy journalism suggests that they were 'given' their awards at this thing, whixh was more akin to medal parades of the world wars, where ribbons were presented, not the medal proper).

'Group hug' from CGS - yike. Imagine Monty doing that...

A bit disconcerting perhaps, but as head of the military I would suggest that he can probably do what he feels is appropriate and there will not be too many people who will have the pluck to tell him otherwise. I thought it was a very human, genuine gesture which the majority of the public would recognise for what it was. That said, I doubt the lad will get anything remotely similar at the Palace! (apart from his medal.....) Now, if William were King and were presenting it to him then a hug would be a possibility. We certainly live in changing times.

Dave.

That’s awesome news! I'm sure the boys with 1 Para have been celebrating large. I’m to the understanding that a Canadian has been nominated for the VC due to his gallantry in Afghanistan, but I guess we will wait and see the outcome.

Cheers

Chaps this is the same VC which I reported on the 26th Feb and which Sketchley Kid commented on a week later. It's not another new one.
