Shropshire Yeomanry blackened cap badge
I have not seen a blackened Shropshire Yeomanry cap badge before and unless there was a Shropshire Yeomanry Home Guard, I cannot see why this one has been blackened.

Note the complete lack of blackening on the reverse. Perhaps painted after use?

I agree with Thomas.
The badge looks very well polished from loss of detail on the crown and leopards faces in comparison to the amount of blacking left. Would suggest it was worn and polished as a brass badge. Plus as Thomas said the lack of any blacking to rear supports that this badge has been painted at a late date IMO. |

It is certainly strange and has clearly been well used before it was painted.

Here is a idea; an ex member of the Shropshire Yeomanry joins the Shropshire Constabulary and paints his old Yeomanry badge so that he can continue to wear it undetected as a Constable.

Marc,
an interesting idea but we will never ever know. Some of the local inhabitants can be a bit frugal, probably through necessity. When we were looking for a suitable house about 10 years age, we looked at an old farmer's cottage in which the main bedroom had been wallpapered using a sample book, every square was a different pattern.
