POW AIRBORNE BERET
Got this 1945 KANGOL beret today ...I could not understand why it had a WO Class 2 Badge on it and after looking under the badge saw that it has been on the beret for a very long time.
I have the book British Airborne Headdress and on page 42 I think I found the answer...It was POW used by a non Airborne soldier in a POW camp as per the photo ..the soldiers put on various badges not conforming to the regulations. This beret came with a AAC beret which I will post seperate |

You would think he would have swapped it over when he returned home, being a Warrant officer n all?

He must have been very unlucky to have such a late dated beret and become a pow.

POW Airborne Beret
Still possible though. The 6th A/B was in the Ardennes up until February 1945 and Op Varsity took place in March 1945. After that the 6th Airborne Division continued up to meet with the Russian Army at Wismar in May 1945.
There were a number of 6th A/B men captured right through this time who ended up in POW camps. Cheers Arnhem |

I remember reading that it was suggested the tan lining berets were intended for the far east. I wonder when exactly were the 1945 Z marked berets issued.
