Probably not a driver, but a DCLI soldier wearing the star badge I presume between 1908 and 1914?

The star shown here is the Efficiency badge awarded originally to Volunteers, later to Territorials. In the Territorial force this was awarded for being judged efficient four time. It continued to be used in the TA as Badges, Arm, Stars, Worsted, SD, Efficiency, TA.

Grumpy's book illustrates it as 33 and notes that it was not declared obsolete until 1952.

I guess this Lance Corporal would be Essex Regiment early WW2 or just before?, in this case quite a large star above the wheel.

Here is a drivers badge.

Anyone care to tell me exactly what it is?

Not you Grumpy - you wrote the book on it - literally

Nope, there is more to it than just that.

Look at it carefully.

Default Driver Second Class (Star above steering wheel)

That is a six point star - there is also a five point version - why?

The answer is - 6 pointed stars = Royal Marines.

They use the Naval 6 star on their badges unlike the Army's 5 star.

The badge is a Drive 2nd Class.

I had forgotten RM: good one!

This despite a solemn agreement c. 1880 for the Army and RM to adopt commonality of uniforms and badges. This is recorded in the RACD leders at Kew.

Six-point stars ....... a grey area in a grey subject!

I have never seen an official Army reference to them. A few clues picked up over the years suggest two Army associations: RA, and Volunteer.

Damn, overlooked the six pointed star. No star is driver 3rd class, and wheel and crown is driver 1st class.

Rob,
Thats an interesting photo and as you say, a large star above the crown.

I think it may be two badges used to make one,ie - a drivers wheel badge already worn and the star added when qualified.
