We wore denim tank suits in the RHG LAD in the late 50s and I believe a lot of REME attached to armoured regiments did also and some attached personnel with RAC regiments wore the black beret.

Not at all , your suggestion is a valid as mine or anyone else's. I was simply stating an alternative possibility.

Good info. Of course it's common sense isn't it to wear coveralls. Not that the army was ever known for common sense.

Some RAC units definitely wore black berets up until 1957 though. 8H did for sure and still do on OCA occasions.

Is that a "leopards head" (Left = white metal? and right = white worsted wool on khaki?) on those chevrons do you think?

A higher resolution scan on the photo in that area might reveal what it is?

Hi Griff

That scan is at 2400dpi if I go any higher my old laptop shudders to a halt, and it is quite a small picture.

That's when men were men and sheep were nervous at Lulworth Cove.

Rob

Just scan a small selected area (the chevrons) at that resolution.... not the whole photo You should be able to pre select the area just before the scan in your scan software.

It will have to wait a little while the photo is currently at a tank museum in North Devon for a second opinion.

It came with some negatives which I'm hoping an expert can scan for me which may shed some more clues.

Rob,
Just back from exercise in France - to find the negatives waiting for me. Many thanks - I'll see what the experts in London can do with them in terms of scanning and printing. Mike

Apologies for the delay - another phase of the same Exercise in France intervened. Here - with Rob Miller's permission - are the best of the other seven negatives - with a particularly well marked Daimler Armoured Car, probably in Libya. Mike

Thanks Mike, they came out much better than I thought they would.

Were you able to get any more detail from the Churchill picture?

I think that the Armoured Car pics are Life Guards in Palestine 47/48....this is the Charging Rhino we in 2AB. adopted in May 47 as we sailed for Palestine....I do have pics when I can find them!
