Default Apprentice Boys badge

Could someone tell me if this is a cap badge ?I know it is a group from Northern Ireland. It appears to be sterling.I am also wondering if there is something missing from the upper right quadrant.

There is nothing missing from the upper right. The main body of your badge is the armorial bearings of Derry/Londonderry:

http://www.ngw.nl/int/gbr/d/derry.htm

As you may know, the 'Apprentice Boys' is a Protestant fraternal society, based in Derry.

As to whether or not your badge is for the cap, I do not know. Would it be possible to see the reverse and have the dimensions; it may give a clue?

Regards,

Peter.

hi,

the apprentice boys of derry usually wear bowler hats while paradeing so i would say this is a badge for their sash/collarate.

the local bands wear mainly military type cap badges but perhaps a derry band has used this as a cap badge.

I am fairly sure that this is an emblem worn on the sash/collarettes by members of the Apprentice Boys of Derry .
They commemorate the siege of Derry in 1689 , while some wanted to surrender, thirteen apprentice boys kept the city's gates closed, and held out until the city was liberated.

I think a sash badge makes the most sense. The lugs seem too short for a hat.
