I've had this many years and always wondered what its purpose was?

Its aprox 20mm in AA.

Just my thoughts but it looks like something that has been put together, this part of the press stud would normally be in 2 parts with the canvas/webbing etc sandwiched in between, this appears to be the front of a button pushed over the bottom spring part.
Hopefully someone else will have a better idea or know what it's use may have been.

Just a thought but is there any chance that it is for epaulettes/shoulder boards. A 'modern' press stud fixing which replaced the old screw thread pattern?
