Hi Iain
I don't want to put a damper on your nice find, but I don't think it'll be silver. I have the same plaid brooch which also has the 211 stamped on the rear. Mine looks like it may have been plated at some stage but that is wearing off on the back. I suspect yours may just be plated. I would think a silver one would at least have 'silver' or some other identifying mark on it.

the text is "8th Inf", 8th infantry, 8th SAI.

don't worry, I intend having it checked but either way I'm very happy. I agree, it should have a hallmark or some indication.
