Can any of you identify Churchill's cap badge?
I believe that this photo was taken in Normandy, shortly after D-Day.
Can any of you tell me which badge Churchill has on his cap, please? |

Taken at the Rhine Crossing I believe. He was Colonel of the QOOH and I think is wearing that badge. Mike

As Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports its possible he is wearing the old 5th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment. Just a wild theory but the badge does look similar.

badge, headdress, British, 5th (Cinque Ports) Territorial Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment, other ranks. © IWM (INS 5749)IWM Non Commercial Licence Churchill, however, was authorized wear of the insignia by virtue of his appointment as Honorary Colonel of the R Sussex R (TA) in 1941 (and remained so until his death in 1965). It's possible that particular Hon. Colonelcy may have been connected to his appointment as Lord Warden. Of note, following Churchill's death, the next Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports (Sir Robert Menzies, former Australian PM) was also the next HCol of the TA unit that continued the lineage of the 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...5345/page/6570 Quote:

While the photos previously posted in this thread of WSC in army uniform at various time during the war show him (appropriately?) wearing the insignia of Honorary Colonel of the 5th Bn (Cinque Ports), Royal Sussex Regt, he had on occasion wore the insignia of at least one other regiment - 4th Queen's Own Hussars, in which he had served as a young officer and was appointed its Colonel in October 1941.

Though WSC had done his Territorial service with the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars, by the time that he was invited to be their HCol, they had been one of the yeomanry regiments to be re-roled as artillery (specifically as 63rd Anti-Tank Regiment RA) thus his appointment as Hon. Colonel of that unit was in the Royal Artillery. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/7103 Quote:

Hi again,
It would be the officers' version, either in bronze or like the silver one centre top in my display. Kind Regards, Pete. |
