Life.
Life is indeed a wonderful thing, full of surprises, whilst looking for a badge for Iain's friend, the Lieutenant Colonel (and, doubtless, his RSM), I found a duplicate BMR set I had no idea that I had even got!
Okay so not scarce, but, over one hundred years old and antiques proper. |

And fate brought me to your post, a sure sign that you should give them to me.
You would'nt want to upset fate would you? I only have a no doubt fake cast boot badge. |

I also have a BMR helmet badge, also one with the crown cut off, a single ST, a pair of "rough and ready collars" and a single "rough but ready."
BMR set 004.jpg regards, Iain

Iain,
I have never seen an example without the loop for the slouch hat ring, does your example that still retains it's crown not have it? Regards Frank |

Hi Frank,
yes it does have; perhaps I should have referred to it as a smasher hat badge, but the NMR were also worn as helmet badges.... regards, Iain

Phil,
it's the Border Mounted Rifles, a Natal outfit. In 1894 the NMR split into 2 units to form the the Natal Mounted Rifles and Border Mounted Rifles. In 1913 they once again amalgamated into the 3rd Mounted Rifles, (NMR) regards, Iain

The significance of the crown being cut off is that there was a lot of resentment amongst Boers after the ABW and they didn't like serving "under the crown;" hence they cut it off!

I think they look better with the crown than without! Regards Frank |

Hi Frank,
yes it still looks good without the crown and of course it was worn so its collectible! I saw a SAP helmet badge the other day, also with the crown cut off. They had to make a square cut into the badge to remove the crown and it looked quite ugly! regards, Iain

Very nice,
I need one like that but they don't come up. The BMR were involved in the defence and relief of Ladysmith...... regards, Iain
