Great Collection of Vol buttons. It would be great if you could maybe take some closer pics of some of the differing variants in that group with who you think or know they are. I'm always trying to learn more about them and the BV ones for example are they local to IOW?

Yes all local to the IOW. I would say the BV is probably Bembridge LV. The 'N' is Newport, 'S' Shanklin or Sandown. The Newport buttons have block or script letters. I picked up a smaller IWV button on Sunday. It is only 15mm unlike the others which are 20mm. Like your button most of mine don't have the shank left on the back. That lends to just rot off, but I do have a couple that do. I haven't see any sign of marking on the back that I can remember. What close ups do you need?

Regards
Irv

Fascinating many thanks you really have done well to have dug all those. What i like about metal detecting and these buttons is we have a chance to tie down a few with places when the few letters by themselves are hard to go by out of context.
The few questions i have is the top row 2nd left did you think that was variant of Newport or was that another force did you think?. Top row 4th left was one i would like a close pic of if thats ok and the bottom right 2 i can't make out what lettering did they have.

Both of those buttons are SLV, so Shanklin or Sanddown. I would go for Shanklin as it is larger but can't confirm that. I'll take some close up pictures for you.

I've now been told mine (freshwater one) is not an IOW button so you might not see one of those in your neck of the woods.

An earlier thread on this forum identified No. 6 as an early Royal Yacht Squadron button.
