Default 1st Ranger Bn

Hi Gents,

Forgive posting this US patch in this section but I thought I would likely be the best place.

I met with a family yesterday who have consigned a large group of identified items to me. The centerpiece being a First Pattern F-S Knife. The soldier to whom all these belonged (now sadly no longer with us) served in the 1st Ranger Battalion.

The only piece of insignia in this group was his shoulder title you see here. I'm afraid I won't be able to offer this as an individual piece here on the forum as it is just one small part of a large, important and historic group. However any guidance members can give me on this shoulder title would be most gratefully received and aid me in cataloguing the whole group prior to offering it for sale on my website. As I'm not especially knowledgable on US insignia this would be of great assistance.

Thanking all in advance.

Cheerio,

Roy

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that mate. I strongly suspected that would be the case but I'm very pleased to get that confirmation.

Cheers,

Roy

Very nice example by the looks
Good that you are keeping the grouping together - always sad when groupings are split and context is lost
Thanks for sharing
Mike

Hello Mike,

Yes it is always great to keep such a group together. I have spoken on and off with the family for over two years now and then finally decided it was time to let all these items go as they are elderly themselves now. Fortunately they are only a couple of hours away, so I drove down to see them yesterday and it was great hearing all the personal stories.

I do love finding F-S Knives that are new to the market and that have not been in a collection before, but it's especially nice when they come with other items like this insignia and icing on the cake when they come directly from the family.

Cheerio,

Roy

Roy, this looks to be a nice WW2 scroll. It exhibits the thicker letter embroidery from the period. There have been numerous postwar re-do’s of this and other Ranger Scrolls however the letters tend to be a bit thin. Hope you post some of the group to the forum for us to see.
Best
Jack

Hello Jack,

Thank you for that.

For interest here is an initial photograph showing the entire grouping.

Cheers,

Roy

As Paul and Jack say, a nice original US-made 1st Ranger scroll, right as rain. Identical to one I have. And I agree, it’s great to see it survived so many years as part of an intact grouping, thanks for sharing the photos.

Regards,
Donovan

Thanks you gents,

I was thrilled to assist the family in finding this a good home. I'm very well aware that the Rangers trained alongside Commandos at the Scottish Commando facility in Achnacarry but this is the first time I have come across a First Pattern F-S Knife from one of those Rangers, so a wonderful grouping in every respect.

This group has now found a new home in it's entirety I'm pleased to say. Here is a link to the listing for some more images.

Very nice to see the full grouping on your site - also to hear it found an appreciative home.

Thanks for that Mike,

I get contacted maybe three or four times a year by a family that has inherited a First Pattern F-S Knife, if things work out then end up sending it my way in order to find it a suitable home. If I'm very lucky it comes with provenance but it is rare such an exceptional grouping surfaces, so it is especially nice when it does.

Cheerio,

Roy
