Paddington Rifles
Would anyone care to comment on this badge, hopefully it ticks the boxes?
Cheers Tony.

Tony,
It’s spot on. From the same die as one of the badges shown in KK. This type is very distinctive as it has a small fillet of metal to the right of the crown running onto the circlet. Here are a few of mine for comparison. Cheers, Luke Last edited by Luke H; 04-04-18 at 07:55 PM. |

Luke,
If Kipling and King shows a genuine example (very probable) then I agree it looks good. Nice examples you show. Attached KK image. Tony.

Tony,
Originally I wasn’t a massive fan of this type and did suspect badges from this die may be early fakes due to the wonky crown and that their quality didn’t strike me as being very Edwardian. However a badge from this die is also shown the 1969 edition of BADGES OF THE BRITISH ARMY 1820-1960 by F. Wilkinson. Below for reference. I’m not aware of any fakes or restrikes in this book... yet. Additionally this photo convinced me: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/fo...rm-badge-help/ If you look closely I’m convinced the asymmetrical crown is very apparent. Tried to highlight this in my last post in this thread: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ght=Paddington Add to that these badges are certainly rare as one would expect, albeit I have picked up 3 in the last year through sheer luck. So personally I’m happy they’re the real McCoy. Luke |

Just to add some clarification around the badge worn in the photograph.
The other accepted pattern of Paddington Rifles is this type with the 3 dots. As you can see the crown in significantly different from that in the picture - much more squat and Tudor looking. Every officers badge I’ve ever seen is from this die, albeit every officers badge I’ve seen was voided. Here is it being worn: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ght=Paddington Cheers, Luke Last edited by Luke H; 04-04-18 at 08:45 PM. |

I am finding myself increasingly envious. These are really nice examples and definitely spot on. Am I correct that when the crown appears to be 'overhanging' or if you like protruding, then this a key sign to look for?

Quote:
1) fillet of metal between crown and circlet on viewers right 2) gap between laurel sprays above ‘Paddington Rifles’ scroll 3) very oval ‘o’ in ‘of’ looks more like a 0 (zero) The standard fake (merged DD die flaw) lacks all the above points, there is a less common fake which does have the gap between the laurels and an oval ‘0’ - post #27 in this thread http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...dington&page=2 Cheers, Luke Last edited by Luke H; 04-04-18 at 09:42 PM. |
