The badge looks to be a good one. Has all the correct attributes. Of course one can never be too sure until it is in ones hands.

Very difficult for me to tell from such small images, but one thing I can just about make out are the short legs, which I believe to be a good sign.

Yeah, I noticed that and also the central owl is up right is a good sign. But just based on the colour for now.

I just realized, and went to the ebay listing. The pics are better. Actually i would lean towards being OK, but still there's something about the definition. The lugs look long enough and have some thickness to them. Here's mine, and as you can see the clarity of the detail is much better.

In my opinion, the eBay one is fake. As confirmed in previous threads, look at the "V" between the scroll and tail of the right hand owl.

It went for £37 so someone was convinced. It didn't look too bad to me. I put it on overlay pic on the computer and there were no discrepencies.

Leeds Pals?
Opinions please. This badge came in an auction lot ( Not ebay ). It was tarnished black and has scrubbed up like silver plate. NEW PICS FURTHER DOWN

The Leeds Pals badge was struck in solid silver, bronze, low quality gilt, brass and blackened brass. I have not heard of a silver plate nor a wm one being used before. Simon is rihgt about the picture, it is not really big enough nor high enough resolution to be positive. However, there are a couple of tell tales that are worth pointing out. The first is the hung lamb. Repros usually have an ill defined starved lamb, your badge appears to have the well fed lamb that genuine badges have though there are repros that have this trait as well. The second is the long legged owls which is not good. Genuine pals badges had only short legged owls. If you have a look at my album on West Yorkshire badges you will see some examples. The coronets to the owls or `Leeds Budgies` to the locals are the right shape though they appear to be set at an unusual angle. Gut feeling is the badge is suspect and shows signs of a repro though i am hoping that a more detailed photograph may prove me wrong. Do you have a scanner? I find i can get far, far better quality images from a scanner than i could ever get from a camera!
Keep smiling, Dave PS, the solid silver badge is a very rare item as only 25 were struck for official issue. These badges were given by the Lord Mayor who helped raise the first battalion to each officer at the presentation on the steps of Leeds town hall. I know of the whereabouts of 2 of these badges, one of which i am pleased to say is in my collection which i have scanned and is shown in my album.

Hi Billy, my first reaction is I'm afraid not good. The legs are pretty thin and longer than should be. Also I believe your lamb is a little anorexic. These pointers are what I've picked up on here and elsewhere. I posted mine, which gives you something to check some of the detail. One of the other members may have some intimate detail for a better take on this one.

Simon. Any opinions on this badge are welcomed. As I say, it came as part of a lot of badges, which contained some I wanted. Thanks for the photos of yours. I know it doesnt look like yours, but it does seem to match the image in Gaylors book, although this one is silver. Perhaps it was a space filler for someone?

Just to confuse matters a little more.
Very similar badges were also worn by the former Leeds City Police in white metal & chrome. Senior officers wore silver plated versions. I've attached photos of their cap badge & collar badge. |

Hi Billy,
the close up of the picture sadly confirm that the badge is not a Leeds Pals. The lamb appeared to be ok on the small picture but the detailed one shows it to be wrong. Keep smiling, there are good ones out there. Dave
