If you leave the red vs. blue jewel out of the dating process you end up with 1901-1953, these caps didn't really change much over a long time so the badge's crown is the only clue available.

The general construction and the cap badge (which might not be original to the cap, but for arguments sake and the fact we will never know, we will assume that it is) would indicate 1930's or 40's.

First up, is there any indication of a makers stamp in the centre of the lining? These are often worn, but you might be lucky and they are very useful for dating private purchase caps.

Secondly, is it named? This is often written on on the leather sweatband, although you often find it on the reverse. If it is named, Ancestry have the Naval lists 1888-1970. If you are not a member, I am sure that someone will look it up for you.

I really don't think the Red and Blue jewel thing counts for much, you encounter badges, both civil and naval, that are very clearly post 1921, without a blue jewel, on occasion.

Gentlemen
Because of the rings of stitching in the inside I think this is ww2 or earlier Gieves!

Valid observation, but there were other manufacturers that used this type of construction (Without looking, I have at least two caps by different makers).

Indeed, I have a cap worn by a Senior Rate at the end of and after WW2 whose cap badge has a central jewel that is RED.

Yes I was fortunate to recently acquire a Royal Navy estate, it displays with documentation the transition from Gieves circles to flat production,
I have another with circles but like this the gold is almost worn off!
Kind regards Chay

Mike,

Did you get any further with this cap?

There was a very interesting thread started here

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=65126

but it seems that nothing was forth comming... I have quite a few RN caps from during and just after WW2 with makers stamps that I can add to the above thread, but it would appear that I am not allowed?

So, come on Steve can you get this thread going so we can all learn?

Cheers,

Andrew

Purely gut rather than logic, but the squashing and the battering makes me think it might have belonged to a submariner...
