Efficiency Badge (Volunteers) Diamond Lozenge
I bought a copy of Edwards and Langley's British Army Proficiency Badges earlier this year but like most good books it always seems to lead to more questions.
So was this badge with scarlet backing worn on a green Volunteer Rifles uniform, it seems odd if they were also made with a green backing? It measures 73mm by 37mm. Rob |

Volunteer Regulations say the surround of the badge is to be the same colour as the Austrian knot on the uniform. No mention of the colour of the background so I presume they were all red.

Rob,
they came in a large variety of colour combinations. As Peter says yours is probably off a red tunic with dark blue facings. If its black and not blue it could be off a black rifles uniform with red facings. I have always liked these and have a few different types and sizes. regards

This badge appears more black than dark blue.
There is a 1860 list of uniform colours worn by some Volunteer units in Ripley and Darmanin's Rifle Volunteer Buttons book, Scarlet or red doesn't get a mention except in facings, maybe these colours for Volunteer uniforms are more likely to be later post 1881? Rob |

Rob,
If you look at Appendix 1 Part 2 of Edwards and Langley's British Army Proficiency Badges, it gives several other colour combinations including yours. I agree if worn on a Scarlet Tunic it is most likely after the VB's were formed but as I said it was also worn on Black Uniforms worn by some RVC's. regards
