Default Interesting SUR Badge

Here's an interesting Sydney University Regiment badge I picked up recently.

I suspect its worn by the Pipes and Drums.

It's cast, has a maker's mark on back and a single pin.

Has anyone come across one of these before?

Mick

Hello Mick

Never seen one in all my years of collecting. What is the makers name?

It's hard to make it out. Will try and take a close up photo and see what it is.

It's hard to make out the top line.

Looks like G xxxman

Bottom line says Drummoyne.

I can't recall the maker name but its the same as a few 5th Victorian Scottish and Syd Uni Regt pipes and drums badges I have had, all made by that Drumoynne maker and nearly always really poor quality like the SUR badge pictured, made from a heavy lead type metal with a cheap chrome type coating that will flake off. I suspect private design and purchase by the drums section. The SUR one that I owned had a large ornate reef around the standard hat badge design and stamp impressed maker mark.

thanks, jas

I can confirm all of that description (including the quality issues and the partially indistinct maker's mark). I have one of the SUR badges with the copied Argyll and Sutherland background and the SUR (KC) insignia on top (all one piece and gravity cast). i've also seen one other example in another collection... so they are around.

Mine has the top point of the Argyll and Sutherland design cut out of it... so the badge must have been too tall to fit on some thing other than headdress (I presume)... perhaps on a cross belt>

Regards and happy collecting

Mark
