Default Paddington Rifles?

I think this may be a photo of a Paddington Rifleman, though I'd appreciate members' thoughts please:

The Paddington Rifles were disbanded, I believe, in 1912, so correct period for the Imperial Service Badge, seen here on the right breast.

Not the clearest of images, I grant you, but that badge does look tantalisingly similar [KK1830]. I'm sure those are crossed swords on the non-voided centre, though could be wrong:

With thanks,

JT

It looks like an unvoided economy RE badge to me.

Thank you chaps.

How likely might it have been for a soldier to be wearing an ISB post-1916?

JT, wouldn't he have the black cap badge and buttons with that uniform?. I thought the white metal jobs were only worn on the green patrols.

It's a plain RE with a voided centre. The uniform and backdrop suggest pre war TF to me.

H,

To the best of my knowledge, Paddington O/Rs wore the W/M cap badge. Plus, this wouldn't be the first time I'd seen photos of riflemen without black buttons.

Gonna disagree with you on this one, Alan. I'm not so sure the badge has a voided centre.

Please keep disagreeing and debating though gents. It's a great way to progress and learn from others' views.

JT

JT, I can see where you're coming from about the non-black buttons, Artists Rifles come to mind, also, like yourself, I can see the possibility of a mural crown and crossed swords in that image. Decisions, decisions!!.

H,

Yes, Artists Rifles... good call:

You see it all the time, even with rifles units whose buttons would otherwise be black (Finsbury Rifles, below):

If he was pre-war 10th Londons I would expect black buttons and s/ts as well.

The fact he has the Imperial service badge and the summer camp painted backdrop is pre war TF and not post 1916 RE. The badge is a normal one but its shine has obscured the voids.

Statistically he is far more likely to be one of the many RE TF Regts than a single understrength London regt.

I certainly cannot fault your logic there, Alan, but I'm having trouble getting past the apparent presence of the pommel, grip and quillon of that (viewer's left) sword:

10th Lon.jpg

Definitely the hint of a crown there too, for me.
