I tend to agree with posts 9 & 14 and attach enlargements as far as detail goes, and badge has a definite scroll at bottom.

Hello Tim,
Having looked at New Zealand badges on the net I think you are correct about the photo of the three men, I think the black berets confused me to think they were all the same.

First photograph definitely 1st pattern Royal Armoured Corps so dating it to no later than 1941/42, second photograph definitely New Zealand General Service

I actually think it could be the Royal Tank Regiment badge. I don't think its NZ.

In my mind, NZ makes no sense, why would he transfer from the RASC to a NZ outfit?

Here is another pic at the highest res I can do of others with what appear to the same beret and badge, the chap on the end has a shoulder title but I can't make out what it is.
There appears to be quite a few different badges on display in the whole group.
Agree RAC
Also NEW ZEALAND in the other image
What the logic is I do not know - but that is what it looks like
There would be some logic re RTR but the scroll at the base of the badge looks to protrude over the wreath. The slip on also looks like NEW ZEALAND
Probably Service Records are required to provide a definitive answer, revealing the true state of affairs

Default RAC or Tank Regiment

I always thought that the generic badge for the RAC was the fisted gauntlet . Neither do I think that it is the Tank Regiment . having said that I don't have a clear idea just what it is - only what it isn't

The fisted gauntlet was the second pattern RAC badge (1941-1955 per Gaylor), the monogram badge was the first (1939-1941)
