Phil

There have probably been a few uses but one definite use was Leading Apprentice. Artificers were trained at HMS Fisgard up until the end of 1983. The majority of trainees spent 3 terms there. During the 2nd term the trainees took it in turns to be a Leading Apprentice and to signify this they wore the star you show on their left sleeve (blue on white for the everyday No 8 uniform and red on dark blue on the No 4 uniform and gold on dark blue for No 2 uniform). During the 3rd term 6 trainees from each division were selected to be Petty Officer Apprentices for the whole term, they wore a chevron over a star on the left sleeve (blue on white for No 8, red on dark blue for No 4 and gold on dark blue for No 2 & No 1 uniform which was issued in your 3rd term). There was also one Chief Petty Officer Apprentice selected for the whole term, he wore a chevron over star badge on each sleeve. The other style of badges are shown at the link.

There is one of these Apprentice stars as an armband on ebay now:

Vendor description:

Royal Navy cloth armband with printed star badge.
First Class Junior and Leading Apprentice.
Believed to date from early 1950's.
A bit grubby from wear...

Hi Phil,

I have seen other small stars similar to this example in the past on ebay. If I see another I will post.

This one tho is new to me. The dealer I have bought from in the past, he is RN & a good reliable vendor.

It ends on Jan 23.

Bryan
