Default A challenge

I saw the trunk in the attached photograph in a local Antique Center this morning.

My first thoughts were it possibly belonged to a member of the Militia who went off to the war in South Africa.

I wonder exactly how much can be discovered about W.D.Gordon of the 3rd Suffolk Regiment ?

All the avenues I have tried so far end in brick walls.

Anyone any ideas ?

Thanks Leigh,

My searches had been on the basis that he went to South Africa around 1900 but perhaps I should have kept an open mind.

There is a WD Gordon "South Africa" mentioned in the London Gazette March 15th 1901, but it doesn't look like him:

The following appointments to the Staff of the
Lines of Communication, made in South Africa
are confirmed I—- ................................................
................................
Lieutenant-Colonel W. D. Gordon, Canadian
Staff, to be a Commandant, graded as a Deputy-
Assistant Adjutant-General whilst so employed.
Dated 23rd January, 1901.
