something strange from somerset
Hi All.
I just recieved this back from Dave we both thought it was a osd that had been re-lugged as if you look at the first picture it appears bronzed/blackened with signs of a blade at the back of the horn which is why i sent it in to be re bladed,But as you can now see the top is white metal, so is there a story behind this.. a broken badge had the top replaced ..someone matching two badges up to create a third , seems strange though to butcher a pair of collectable badges to create one that sold for just over a fiver if memory serves me right. The plan was to moove it on once it was sorted along with a oxf and bucks osd but now.... Iain Last edited by iain; 27-07-13 at 02:42 PM. |

Iain,
a very nice find, at a guess (as I've NEVER seen one before) I'd say a pre First World War 4th & 5th Somersets officers "Dress/Forage" cap badge that's been "dulled down" for wear in Service Dress? Or another possible answer, is that it is a badge worn by a "Regular" officer who moved to the Territorials and rather than buy new badges, he had his original altered? I don't think it is a "Fantasy" piece? A Superb badge! Well done and also to Dave for another outstanding restoration! Andy Last edited by 2747andy; 26-04-13 at 03:27 PM. |

Andy,
Glad you like it must say it was a bit of a suprise when i first set eyes on it,i have discussed with dave having it restored to the colour it was at first would you leave it as is.i must say it grows on you the longer you look at it. And yes Dave has done a great job as usual. Iain |

It's all a bit strange in Somerset I think it's likely to be a period repair or modification, the SLI badge has several weak points. Here's a few casualties that I've found from house clearances! Lee |

Having had the chance to view the item, I am now of the opinion that it has been "Messed with". Somewhere along the line someone has replaced the "Jellalabad" upper scroll with a reproduction "S.A. 1900-01" scroll and they have gone so far as to pad out the rear with car body filler to make it look cast like the lower half (which is 100% Genuine). Had Dave not removed the OSD finish when actioning his repair it would have been almost impossible to detect!
