Help with identification please
Can anyone help with identifying the enclosed button, sold as "1st City of London Volunteer Rifles". If a rifle volunteers button I cannot find it in the reference book by Ripley and Darmanin. The other possibility is that it is from 6th (City of London) Battalion (City of London Rifles), London Regiment - although I have been led to believe that this unit wore standard "rifles" buttons only, and that the word "Volunteer" is absent from their unit designation. It may also represent something else entirely of course.
Would appreciate some guidance as to where I can place this in my collection. Button appears to be made of horn, is about 24mm and carries the backmark JAs Groves & Sons, Halesowen. Any info on this manufacturer from the internet fails to date this button. Regards Piper305 |

Could it be WW1 VTC for the 1st City of London Volunteer Regiment ?
I am sure I have seen another somewhere but I cannot find it at the moment. P.B.

Hi Piper,
8thfoot is right; the button was worn by the 1st Battalion, County of London Volunteer Regiment. It was a 1st World War unit (for home defence) so outside the scope of the Rifle Volunteers book. |

Button Guru,
Welcome to the Forum, it is cheeky of me but are you one of the authors of the book mentioned in the first post of this thread ? Regards P.B.

I knew that I could never pass for a Stealth Bomber or one of Star Trek's Klingon cloaking devices! Just don't believe all that is said about me. I'm just like every other uniform button collecting enthusiast and have a box full of unknowns too. D. |
