Border Regiment Pipers item ?

Hi PB,

Yes I saw this on ebay and forgot to highlight it, I know they were one of our most Northerly Infantry Regiments, but did they have pipers?

I know the Northumberland Fusiliers had Pipers other than those in WW1 raised battalions but I have never heard of the Borders having them before.

I will try and compare the battle honours of the regiment with those on the Plaid Brooch later.

Am I right in stating the Middlesex Regiment had pipers?

Maybe I dreamed it or the cold remedies I've been taking for the past three weeks are having an odd effect.

Yes you are right, it was during WW1, I think there was an article on their badge many years ago in the MHS Bulletin. I will try and see if I can find it.

The original article was in the Bulletin of February 1953 page 51 and was an article called "16th Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment (Pipers (?) Glengarry Badge )" by H.G.Harper.

I am sure it was confirmed that there were Pipers in the Middlesex and that the badge described in the original article was indeed a Pipers Glengarry badge of the 16th Middlesex Regiment ( there were also Pipers in the Royal Fusiliers I understand ) but I cannot find the references at the moment.

Somebody has paid £45 for a Plaid Brooch with a circle which has the battle honours of the Highland Light Infantry ( if you look carefully you can see the thistles amongst the honours ) and on which someone has added a Border Regiment badge.

Sometimes words fail me.

The Border badge is the three drilled holes fake which is also always lacking the red felt retaining strip.
Perhaps there was a Border Vs. Borderers confusion in the fakers shed?

it amazes me that people buy things like this, when it is so easy to validate its authenticity, i realise that most of us collectors have been caught out with fake badges paying good money for such items me included during our time as collectors, but surely with brilliant sites such as the forum and other sites available giving your hard earned cash to fakers, either whether naive sellers or out and out makers of badges made to decieve should be harder than it appears to be to some people.

The Middlesex Regiment Pipers badge was illustrated on the front cover of Bosley`s postal catalogue of 18th May 2005.
