What would the initals mean? Lewis Machine Gunner? Looks like the LG badges that used to be around,( sleeve badges) for Lewis Gunners I believe.

There is a continuing debate as to it is Lewis Machine Gun(er) or Light Machine Gun(er)..... going on since 1914.... so....

hi all,
thanks for the replies.
'Lewis' or 'Light' is OK,by me.
The actual country of origon is what I'm after here ?
It is flat backed (very smooth) & looks to be struck(?),much like a Shoulder Title.
May have had some 'hand-finishing' ,also?
Cheers !
Steve

One other option Steve, would be to check for any other countries that used the Lewis gun.

I see no need for debate. In 1917 the LG wreath badge was specifically sanctioned for Lewis Gunner First Class. HG wreath was intro. at the same time for the Hotchkiss gun. In 1921 the HG badge was discontinued, and LG was issued for both weapons. The Lewis gun continued in service for many years, and was still being issued [in emergency] in 1940, by which time the Bren, a much better weapon, had superceded it. However, neither LMG in wreath or BG in wreath [although such badges abound] seem to have any official authority or SP.

The conclusion is surely that there were better things to do than worry about inventing a new badge for a new weapon when the Bren came along, as LG was already for all Light [machine] guns.

After all, MG stood from 1913 to date as the Medium Machine Gunner First Class badge, and nobody agonised over adding an extra M.

So LG = at first Lewis Gun, then = Lewis and Hotchkiss, and, latterly, Light [machine] gun.

Looking at the badge at the beginning of this thread, I don't think it is Canadian made. The Canadian metal trade / skill at arms badges seem to be struck not cast.
