3rd Transvaal Scottish
Hi All,
I finally got my hands on a Regt Laeveld cap badge. Regt Laeveld, 7th Medium Regt, formally 3rd Transvaal Scottish. a 134.jpg 3 TS were badly mauled at Sidi Rezegh. Some Jocks manned Artillery guns as the gunners fell and although afterwards, initially disbanded they were reformed as an Arty Regt hence the Murray of Atholl tartan

Very nice. I assume the patches of Athol tartan are hard to find.
Just out of curiosity, weren't Regt Laeveld formerly 2 Medium Regt, and it wasn't until much later that they transmutated into 7 Medium Regt. The original 7 Medium Regt ex- 3TS was disbanded in 1960. Having said that, I don't suppose anybody has a spare 7 Med Regt (3TS) embroidered shoulder title going to waste? Keith |

Keith,
You are right about Regiment Laeveld formerly being 2 Medium Regiment. 7 Medium Regiment (3TS) and 2 Medium Regiment both existed after WWII and into the 1950s. As far as I can work out, 2 Medium Regiment became Regiment Laeveld at some point in the late '50s/early '60s and was still listed in the 1971 order of seniority. When the SADF reformed 7 Medium Regt in the 1970s, members of Regt Laeveld formed the core of the unit, hence the association with Regt Laeveld. The tartan backing referred back to the 3TS heritage and I think the badge was the earlier Laeveld badge. The shoulder flash depicted a thistle (3TS again) on artillery colours. Authentic tartan backing is not that hard to find but the embroidered shoulder titles are and I have not managed to get my hands on one yet. Original (verified) backing flashes would be a challenge but there is quite a lot of old tartan from that era still around from old kilts (generally what the troops used as well). The unit was also discussed in this thread: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=28229 Regards Craig |

Keith, the 7 Medium Regt badges don't come up often but with it's original Murray of Atholl patch even more so.
The tartan is fairly easy to come by, I have quite a few pieces myself. The badge altho a cannon is actually a Long Tom, (115mm Creusot) from the ABW. At Bergendal, not far from Nelspruit, the last set piece battle of the war with all 4 Long Toms taking part. regards, Iain Quote:

Hello Iain,
The wretched Long Tom was actually a 155mm piece firing an equally wretched ninety four pound shell, a nice badge, by the way. Regards Frank Quote:

Hello Iain.
I think the badge is actually quite a good representation of a Creusot, I certainly would not have noticed if you have not pointed it out, a nice thing. Regards Frank |

Hello Frank,
this is a replica of a Creusot on the Long Tom pass. After Bergendal they hauled a Long Tom, (all the Long Toms?) up this pass. 6b233ff1d908cd8Long Tom monument 2.jpg regards, Iain

Hi Frank,
apparently the original 7 Medium Regt was equipped with two 8 gun batteries of 5.5 inch guns. regards, Iain
