Lots of time on their hands, I expect. Leads to many 'odd' things, liking 'bulling up' the guns and so on.

In the 19th century the thing to doi was to outshine the sentries of the units posted with you in the 'lines', so they literally stood them on a chair to dress, polish and primp and then carried them out to fall in so no dust would get on their boots. Or that's the tale!
