Theft of Dambusters logbook
I see that an Alex Bateman has just been convicted at Wood Green Crown Court of theft of a Dambuster veterans log book from his widow as well as apparently being involved in the theft of a number of rare documents regarding RAF operations in WW2 from the National Archives. He awaits sentencing for this crime which is a terrible thing to do to an old lady.
I just hope no one has bought any documents from anyone that might be the property of the National Archives at Kew. There is a full write up in the Telegraph on line. I think I recognise the name ( (but there could be more than one person of that name) with relation to Jeff Du Vivier who was a member of 'L' Detachment and 1 SAS during WW2 and who was involved in selling some SAS insignia on ebay that was queried but I could be wrong and am happy to be corrected if I am. Having just spent some time recently at the National Archives doing some research it is very difficult to go in and out without being checked by security, so I wonder how he managed it.

According to articles in the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Daily Express, it is the Alex Bateman who has written other stuff about the Dambusters. If it is true it is a disgraceful state of affairs and reflects badly on anyone trying to do research. I hope they throw the book at him!

Robbing an old widow is not his only crime.

A few years ago I was researching the WW1 Combat Reports of No4 Squadron RAF only to find that the very ones I wanted had been stolen some years previously ! What the hell is the matter with these people !!?? Can't they be satisfied with a copy ?? So thoughtless and selfish, robbing the Country of its heritage ... words fail me. What would be an appropriate sentence ? |

Yes, that would work. We would, all of us. then end up paying then disability benefit for life.
I'm not saying anything in defence of this lowlife. All I am sayig is keep a sense of proportion.

That is me keeping a sense of proportion and the thief wouldn't get any disability benifit as I'd have "THEIF"stamped on there forehead with a hot iron so we know who not to pay it to, don't take to kindly to people who steal!!!

How about dropping them out of the bomb bay of a Lancaster?

Now that would be poetic justice!

Some people would do anything for a ride in a Lancaster

And they'd have to live in embarrassment with the spelling mistake for ever
But seriously, these people, especially seeing as he appears to be a child pornographer, should have no mercy. |

I have to say that I was appalled by this, I seem to remember reading one of the tabloids back in September last, that Bateman, had been ordered by a court to pay his victim some twelve and a half thousand pounds.
