Good or bad cap badges ?
Hi,
I am a Norwegian that has taken a great interest in british militaria, probably triggered by one single badge that I many years ago was given by my grandmother. This has probably belonged to my great uncle, who was a english sergeant in the british liberation forces i Norway in 1945. I will show this later... For now, my question is concerning some badges that I have been offered to buy. They are probably all bought at arms fairs in England, but after browsing this forum, I understand that there is a LOT of fakes and restrikes etc. Cap badges is not something I have handled before, I would therefor be VERY greatful of advice about these items. If any of them are considered genuine, I also would appreciate any other information that could be given about them. I have of course tried to find out the units, but I haven't succeded in all cases. None of them, exept the plastic one, are marked in any way. All loops seems to be of copper. Sincerely Alfonsoer The approx. weight on the badges: Highland Rgt: 13,17 g R. Engineers (plastic): 6,50 g. Marked I-A A.Stanley&Sons Walsall R. Scots Greys: 13,43 g Derbyshire Imp Yeomanry: 18,15 g Unknown: 9,80 g |

Hi Alfonsoer,
Welcome to the Forum. Unfortunately, the only badge I would be happy with is the Royal Engineers, a fairly common plastic economy issue. Bedfordshire Regiment should be voided. Royal Scots Greys should be bimetal. The Derbyshire Imperial Yeomanry may be alright, others will let you know. Cheers, Tinto |

More badges....
Hi,
thank you for your answer, Tinto I feel like a fool even asking about these, I have of course noticed that some of them should be bimetal, but then again, I haven't seen enough of these to rule out variations and such. I hope for some more opinions on the ones you haven't ruled out already. I would really like to buy the good badges, so any opinions will be very much appreciated. (I think I have learned something already by visiting your excellent forum). I am very sorry that I started two threads with the same content. Somebody will perhaps delete the one unanswered? I didn't manage to post pictures of all the badges for rewiew, so I try again, and hope for opinions on these too: I don't know if the weight is of any help when deciding the originality, but here it comes anyway: Leicestershire: 13,38 g (I think this is lacking something on the top, and it doesn't "feel" good) Unknown (the rose): 8,31 g Unknown (initials in the center): 7,43 g ...Or Glory: 13,59 g British-american: 12,91 g Have a nice day! Hi Alfonsoer,
The badges you have shown all appear to be fakes. The Leicestershire Territorial Battalion is minus the top scroll but the badge shown is suspect. Next is the Yorkshire Dragoons, then Grenadier Guards puggaree badge which should be voided. 17th Lancers (Death or Glory) motto should be white metal. Sorry if this disappoints. Cheers, Tinto |

Hi, Tinto and Colin.
Thank you for your answers! A bit disappointed, yes, but also glad that I didn't buy them BEFORE I asked! I think I have learned something by handling these fakes, studiyng this forum and reading about badges. It seems to be a LOT of fake british badges out there! I also have some wwI/II british medals. Are the medals also this widely faked, or is medals a more "safe" collecting area for a relatively fresh beginner? Colin, I am livlig in the Oslo-area. Great forum! Have a Nice day to all of you! |

Hi Alfonso and Welcome to the forum with badges although loads of copies/restrikes you can look into the history of the badges, regiment / Corps and you could go as deep as you wish 1939-45 or 1914-18 wars you may wish to go deeper all the way back to its formation and as in the case today till Amalgamation with another Regiment - therefore a New cap badge! then another Amalgamation, again a New cap badge (where all battle honours are so watered down its hard to see how they can manage to choose!) the history of just One badge "Cheshires say"" will take upteen amounts of hours study, with a collection you can only learn so much about all the various badges you acquire but enjoyable, and the joy of finding a little junk shop selling these and finding a little gem! is Well brilliant! the thing is you don,t need to spend lots of money on Badges acquire them from the Forum members here on the site I do! and as with other members have faith in them! also quite cheaply as well!
As you are just starting out you will find that by placing an ad in " The Classifieds " for badges you will see all of us have spares but all of us have the same badges and dont require those put up for sale most times ! untill of course one pops up which you take a fancy too! you on the other hand can pick and choose and get cheaply! Medals on the other hand are Expensive you will have as much fun and enjoyment researching the Medal winners award as its only given for extreme acts of bravery and goes hand in hand with an engagement in a large/small battle, this could be pivotal or a minor skirmish! but you will uncover that when you research the medal winners Citation (of which you would want with the medal and increasing the cost!) but again its best to stay within a regiment or Corps. But will jump ship on this as for myself badges are cheaper than Medals and only you can decide on where your journey takes you good luck someone else will perhaps give you some more insight into Medals as am sure there will be pitfalls and I don,t know if these are as yet copied to Death! all the best billy |

Hi Alfonso
The Motto (Or Glory) is a common copy.... here is a good one (pre WW2).

Hi, Thank you very much for your advice and pictures on the good motto. The bad badges are returned, but I must admit that I was a bit disappointed... so what did I do? Some research on this forum, some looking around for a genuine piece of the 17. Lancers badge, and when I felt confident, I bought one from the seller Endici. BUT... when getting it in hand, I am no longer that sure about it. I think especially the teeth are very badly defined on this badge, as are also the two ends of the cloth on wich the motto is inscribed. (There are surely an english word for this, but I can't find it...). Would anyone comment on this...? Is this also a fake?

Hi Alfonsoer
This type of Motto looks to be OK ..... probably early cold war so 17th/21st Lancers. I think you purchased this one from ENDICI on eBay?
