I have tried to compare these to known badges but my eyes are not good enough to discerne good from bad, also , surely there was more than one maker of thes badges? Could the forum please check these two examples for me please.

The first pattern which were issued by the Regiment themselves were die-cast on lugs. KLR is the man to tell you more.

Pictures of the backs would be helpful but they should be die-cast flat backed.

Pete

I can only see one photo of the front. If the backs are flat and the badge is solid then they are die cast.

Right - there are three Patterns of Lpl Pals OR cap badges.
The first Pattern - which you show - are die cast, actually solid die cast - as in they have flat badges. These were made by Elkington & Co and paid for by Lord Derby (if you have a silver one you will note the same manufacture). As such, these were 'unofficial' badges authorised by the WO.

The second (first official) badge was Patt 8520/1915 sealed in the autumn of that year (pages missing so can't provide day and month). These badges were die struck and had NS loops. The third (second official) badge was similar but had a slider - this was Patt 9483/1917 sealed on 23.05.1917

This (and probably all earlier ones) was made obsolete on 10.08.1921.

PS if you come across a die struck badge with loops and it has no gap between the eagle's legs - it is an officer's collar badge !

All details from WO files.
