Gordon Highlander badge
I picked this up at a flea market in California for 50 cents. It was in a junk box. Can anyone tell me if this is a WW2 era piece as I know very little about British beret badges. The antlers look like they were bent downward on purpose. I understand that the pattern of cloth on the back means something.

Hi, I would say an original. And old by the look of it. The bending of the antlers was I assume so they didn't catch on anything. The pattern didn't change, so tough to date.
A nice buy for 50c, something I wouldn't mind finding here in NY.. Regards Simon. Last edited by LONGSHANKS; 20-06-12 at 07:07 PM. |

Hi Tonomachi, It is very difficult to date the badge you have as it was worn from 1898 - 1958. The badge was worn on the Tam O' Shanter bonnet or glengarry. http://www.bugpiper.net/images/ghcatalogue/11.jpg and the cloth backing signifies it was worn by the Gordon Highlanders as it is Gordon tartan

With the tartan backing it was only worn on the Tam O' Shanter, on the Glengarry it was worn on a black silk rosette. The Tam O' Shanter was worn from 1915, so if the backing is original it narrows the date of wear down a bit. However quite a few collectors add tartan backing to badges as the tartan backing on the Tam O' shanter was sewn on, so if they came as such is unclear, but from the pics the badge and backing show roughly the same amount of wear and tear.
