Nicknamed 'The Calcutta Tight Horse', the AFI unit was also seen by some of it's members, apparently, as a government scheme to help defray the costs of their polo ponies! OTOH, a few of them did sterling service in WWII in an 'unauthorized' but highly successful raid against a German merchant ship in neutral Goa. I believe David Nicen was in the movie.
A lovely item and just the sort of thing a wealthy unit like the CVL / CLH might have thouyght would add 'side' to their parade uniforms. Thanks very much for sharing it. |
