Cef
Isn't this a very unusual shape for a cef, most had a maple leaf background but I've never seen as traditional UK as this one in the CEF & the first time I've seen this one, I'm not taken up with CEF at all & it struck me as out of the ordinary . Can anyone tell what the inscription is? Ray

RE: 139th Bn
It looks like a standard 139th Bn badge, with the tangs bent outward so that they show on the sides of the badge. Photo on pg 232 of Charltons "Standard Catalogue of First World War Canadian Infantry Badges" Inscription says "Northumberland Overseas Battalion" and the unit was known as the "Northumberland Battalion"

The motto on the top scroll is "Excelsior". Hard to read even with the badge in your hand. Mine is brown-enamelled copper with lugs/loops.
Cheers, Ian. |
