Default RA Spinning Wheel

Just bought a mixed lot of all kinds of badges which included these wheels, presumably for the RA cap badge, they appear unused.

Wow, that's an un-usual lot. Still I never have read yet what was the significance of the spinning wheel. I have an O/R's and an officers with spinning wheel. I even have a theater made one with a one too.

Simon.

LEE, How big are they? Do they have any type of fixing on the rear? Could they be trade badges-Carpenter and Joiner??

They are approx 20mm with a single pin in the centre, too small for trade, must be for the cap badge

both of the spinning wheels are bang on 20mm wide.
in your picture they look like tank track wheels from a plastic model kit!

There must be loads of nice RA badges out there in need of a wheel, could have yourself a nice little niche in the market Lee !! Good find though.

Default Wheel badge

I agree with the above from Lee (Old Smelly) the wheels are additions for the mounted wheel type gunner's badge. The wheelright / carpenter's badge is approx 33mm in diameter, with obviously no trace of a centre pin. DJ.

His spelling is almost as good as his badge "Canaqdian MG Corps cap badge"

Have you thought maybe they are not military? Would fit nicely on an Hornby?

Cheers, Dave

Default Is it just me?

Why do people on the internet in general always waste time remarking on typing errors? We all make them but so long as the meaning is understood I never have a problem with it. With poor spelling and grammar I'm sorry for the poster who missed out on an education as well rounded as mine.

I've just had a brainwave (dangerous). I'm gonna get all my broken badges, odds and ends, wheels and anything else I can find and send them to our resident repair man and see if he can make a load of badges to completely fictitious units and then sell them on Ebay for loads of money......this time next year we'll be millionaires!!

I did once come across a reference saying that spinning wheel RA badges were "illegal" in the UK, but worn in India. Probably one of those old soldiers tales.

The book was written by a gunner who joined up in the late 1930s and was captured in France in 1940.

All issued Other Ranks brass gun badges are one piece, Officers badges have a mounted wheel that incorporates a pin to hold it to the badge, if played with this can be loosened and made to ‘spin’. The brass badges sold by the Canteen and N.A.A.F.I., have a loose wheel with a separate pin. Those badges manufactured in far off places conformed to what ever type of badge was used as the pattern.
