Is it real or is it Middlesex?
This is another badge from my bargain hoard. It looks quite nice, and I thought good enough to be an officer's item. The casting seems quite crisp and the verdigris is a nice touch! However, on reading the article about fakes there was some emphasis on the problems with flat backs, given that most OR badges appear to be stamped out using dies.
Anyway before I take drastic action could you cast your collective eye over this one please? Thanks Andrew |

Middlesex badge
It looks to me like an oficers collar badge that has not been given a bronze finish.

Middlesex officers collar badge
Thanks, that is an interesting observation. Is the size right? Quite lumpy for a collar dog.
Thanks again Andrew |

Further thought
I have just realised that the collar badge has "Albuhera" as a battle honour across the bottom as opposed to "South Africa 1900 -02" which appears on the other Diehards badges I have.
Curious. Andrew |

Andrew, as Rob states, your badge is an Officer's collar badge.
Yes they were a bit lumpy, but nevertheless it is one. Albuhera is a battle honour on all of the regular battalions' scroll. South Africa is on the scroll of badges for 7th,8th and 9th battalions, the 10th battalion had a blank scroll. If you search in the albums for Middlesex, you will discover an album of mine featuring the badges of The Middlesex regiment, which will show you the differences between them. Hope this helps. Collared!
Thanks Brian, that is very clear and helpful. Unfortunately I suspect then the cap badge I have is a fake! Another one from this auction bundle.
Best regards Andrew |

Dying Hard!
Gerard & Brian
Here is the offending item. The more I look at it the more convinced I am that it is not right. Something odd going on around the "ICH". Looks like a large lump of brazing and a poor strike. I was reluctant to fill these pages with the few suspect items but perhaps people would like to share in my joy!! Thanks for your expert view. Best regards Andrew |

Your Middlesex badge looks ok just a bit of a poor quality one, what you have if you didn't know is the badge to the 7th,8th & 9th Territorial Force with the Albuhera scroll replaced with the South Africa 1900-02 one. Gerard

I think it is always worth remembering that a lot of serving soldiers had little interest in either the cap badges they wore,or the quality of their manufacture. They wore what they were issued with without question.
Certainly nothing like the "under the microscope " studies that todays collectors make. P.B.

Why do you think it is not right, it is a very typical example and completely original, all the copies of recent manufacture certainly look nothing whatsoever like the badge you show here.

Nice find, perhaps you might reconsider and post those badges you considered wrong as they could well be fine!
All the very best billy |
