I have never been quite certain just which of three or four MR patterns is correct for NSW. The attached has more cursive letters, and I once saw a collection framed in 1907 which showed two separate cursive letters.
Also seen a cutout style joined in the middle. |

Hi Kingsley,
Very interesting observations, and food for thought. Have a look at the Powerhouse Museum specimen N21305-3 as it is the same as the one I found. Not that museums are infallible (far from it!), but as a newby student to this subject, in the absence of an alternative view, I am reliant on Museums of this status to provide the knowledge I lack. I also found, when searching the net an identical specimen that sold on South African Ebay in 2013 or 14 (for not much money I might add!) regards, Jim |

I once saw a cursive style total offered for sale as Midland Railway by someone whop ought to know. I will try to find some more images of different variations. I think the two separate letters were probably correct.

That's a great find... there's nothing like the thrill of finding a little gem is there

I didnt know that the Midland or Metropolitan Railways ran trains on the Victorian Railways 5 ft 3 in guage in the country East of Melbourne. My understanding is that the Midland had enough trouble dealing with small axels and running hot axle bearings without dealing with our Irish guage !! I do however have a post card of Flying Scotsman running on Puffing Billy's 2 ft 6 in at Tecoma in Melbournes east just down the road from me. Believe it or not ! |
