Just to add into the mix.....
The large Gaunt London mark appears to change position according to date..... before 1960 the mark goes up the slider. I think the "up" mark starts around 1946 and ends around 1960....... but that's just an observation from the two regiments I am looking at below. After 1960 the mark goes down the slider... Production date :- 1961 Card: Inspectorate of Stores and Clothing Pattern No. 18437 Pattern No. 18437 Spec. No. UK/CIC/2124D Cat. No. (CB 7936 deleted) 8455-99 -973-9507 Standard; inscribed, Badges (Organization inserted) Cap Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry (TA) Anodised Aluminium; approved by ORD 17B 17-1-1961; authority given as 54/RAC/231 NV/82/081; signed A Harrison 4.5.62. >>*<< We see the same thing in the Gaunt marked Royal Artillery of the same period (see attached below)... the KC that precedes these two "probably" just has the small Gaunt London mark? and then in the late 1960s we see the B'HAM mark ..... for this regiment shown (also going up & down the slider). The 17th/21st Lancers ORs Wm Motto has an "Up" Gaunt London mark and start their Other Ranks AA production off, from 1964, with a looped Motto marked JRGAUNT over LONDON and then have a B'HAM marked slider. The Military Police have an interesting set of marks around the same period, see attached. I would guess that they squeezed in an order for brass along with the new AA at the time?

Warstone, that's interesting - I'll try and find my notes. Gaunts as in run by the Gaunt family up to 1973 is what I was interested in. My interest really fizzles out in 1958 but I go up to 1967 for TA units. I was trying to find information on the die stamped Liverpool Irish officer's badge which is marked Birmingham. Since the KC WM ORs version was only replaced by an AA QC version in 1964, that year made sense for the officer's one.
Though I have found plenty of Gaunt archives in London and Birmingham I have not come across any from the 2nd WW or later - where are they !? |

Remember some of the "Dead Give A Ways"! Tall Orb Notch to scroll loop Exaggerated Protruding shadow of far wheel Not always easy to spot but if showing all three, take a pass! Andy Last edited by 2747andy; 20-04-14 at 06:56 PM. |

The protruding shadow of wheel should be there as it's the other wheel on the gun carriage

Carl,
It could well be accurate for buttons and enamelled pin badges, but when it comes to metal GAUNT B'HAM marked badges they're almost entirely reproduction items produced for the collectors market and often of Regiments which had ceased to exist many years earlier! Andy |

Some people never learn, and to be honest why are dealers still flogging these as original?

Andy,
A sad state of affairs, a few years ago I was learning what was good and what was not from the likes of Lew, today I now unfortunately see far to many wrong ones on the Clanfield site, perhaps Garry needs to take more advice from his father. Cheers, Hammo2440 Quote:

Marcus,
I've told them both about the "B'HAM" mark, they've obviously decided I'm making it all up! Andy |
