For those who may be interested, the phrases translate to:

1. "What's the damage John?"

I suspect some will be giving the same blank look that the poor Germans used to.

2. "I am an underwater Tank Driver with Mustard!"

Same blank look?

Ry

Yes Phil,

Odd we were and usually drunk. Of course it is "fahrer".

The idea was to Ba*****dise the German language and still make a sentence that would have us cracked up amongst ourselves, squaddy humour!

We kept all the swear words we learned for use between ourselves so as not to offend the Germans too deeply.

Unless you were put in for a language course by the army within the first three months of being in country you were never going to get one as they assumed that by then you would be a lost cause. As you can see they were right

I understood the majority of the words, but the meaning was a mystery, I can understand a German giving you a blank look, they have rather a different sense of humour to Brits in general, let alone a bunch of drunk squaddies. Their humour is more logic based.

I seem to recall an episode of QI mentioning german humour, odd.

Phil

Lets just say that we used to laugh at them a lot more than they laughed at us.

Of course it was all good friendly fun most of the time and we were usually invited back to laugh another day.

Robin, I'm referring to Ry's post here:
http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...52&postcount=7

The badge relating to the battle of Arnhem I believe is for the Oxf&Bucks regiment.

HI Luc,

Yes the last badge that Robin identified was the Ox & Bucks whom I believe made up the Divisional defence platoon.

This and the other badges that he identified can be seen in his post #16 of this thread.

Regards

Ry

No worries Luc,

I'm sure that Robin would enjoy viewing your website if you were to either post or send him a link.

Hi Phil, There is a photograph in the Para Museum of a Para cleaning his locally made badge take during the Italy Campaign. Question is would you rate this as a restrike etc, it seems when this photo was taken no other badges were available at the time.
