Fantastic story. Loved every word.
I served in 1 RTR's old barracks in Munster btw - York Barracks (or York Kaserne as it was known). You could still find the occasional piece of evidence that the 1st had been there.

Major Jock was part of 'Atkins Bros. Hosiery' oldest hosiery company in UK, when bro-in-law Ted returned to UK with my sister, Major Jock welcomed him in with a job right away!

No, Ted was the last, his father was WW1 British Army Officer who emigrated to the States, they lived in 'Norwalk' Conn.
Both my sister and Ted died in UK. Oh yes, 'Our Jack' was Sgt. Tank Commander 13/18th.Hussars. D Day. and I knew Pat Hennesey and spoke to Peter 'Cosy' Comfort (Brrad Pitt who he?) last night. I'll get me coat" |

His story, told in his own memoir "From Horses to Chieftains" is a fascinating read. Raised in the foundling hospital he went on to become RQ of the 8th and whilst joining them as a boy bandsman in Cairo in 1934 he stayed until after amalgamation in 58. From memory he picked up an MM at Sidi Rezegh.
