Well with out the inverted letter 'T' it was worn by Royal Regiment of Artillery "Operators Fire Control" or Radar Operators in plain language.

As a matter of interest, how do we know which way up it should be?

Letter T is much easier to believe than some mystic rune.

Occam's Razor applies, surely?

I have always assumed it to be a military Tailor embellishment showing an Ariel Mast.
