I had an e mail from Ashok - and he says the badge is an "unofficial one" worn on the officers beret ( alongside a metal badge ) - an "indulgence" that several of the Cavalry regiments permit themselves to this day. He's fairly certain that it date's from 1945 > 1950. Because they were "unofficial" he did not include them in his book IZZAT. Tim

That is a very clear explanation. Thank you for researching this together with Mr. Nath.
My original remark of "do not forget the 1947 -1950 period" was only for completeness, but I am satisfied that it now seems to be the most likely period of usage for the badge.
