This is the 8th Battalion colour patch.

WW I Australian colour patches with the ANZAC 'A' have been bringing substantial prices for the past several years. The last ones I sold brought between $550 and $1200.

Some WW I Canadian colour patches have also been fetching high prices. I sold a beautiful set of MG colour patches on eBay for $1378.

Does anyone know much about woven/bullion Anzac A on a colour patch? Are they genuine issue or a post war thing?

hi ed
there's a good appendix on it in Glydes book pg 219-222.
the letter A worn on the colour patch is basically official, being worn from 1916 on. the approval of 11/12/17 gives size and to be made of brass. however from my understanding the gold embroidered A was a private issue or as maybe the 5th batt may have done issued on a unit basis.
glyde notes although the brass A is the most common, examples exist in gold bullion, gold silk and woven brass wire
hope this helps

Thanks BC. I've been after Glydes book for a while now with no luck.

I was shown an example last week but it was a bit pricey considering I didn't know the history of the issue. Hope its still there next week.

Hello coast watcher, Over the Top, by H.G. Harnett of the 2nd Battalion records on p111 that on 16 November 1916 every man who had served on Gallipoli received two sets of purple over green colour patches with a large golden A embroidered thereon. Given that no official authority seems to have been issued at that stage it is probable that regimental arrangements were made to supply these.

Sorry about the book, I had a 1000 printed in 1999 and they were all gone by 2007. I am toying with the idea of producing an electronic version, updated, but have too many other projects on the go at the moment to focus on it.
