Slider made with hole
Anyone knows why sometimes sliders are made with hole ?
Here is a Worcestershire Rgt found on Dunkirk's beaches. It is still full of sand and concretions and stay fragile. Thanks. Vincent. |

Vincent,
There are 2 reasons: 1. Example badges made for sealed pattern cards had these holes on them to enable the card to be tied to the cards. 2. The slider could be drilled by the soldier to sew the badge onto a cap to prevent it falling out and being lost. as yours was issued and worn then it would be the second reason. Alan |

From what I've seen it's common for 3rd Carabinier cap badges to have a single hole in the slider, they don't appear to be "improvements" made by a squaddie and they aren't all going to be sealed pattern items?
The sealed pattern aspect could explain why I have a Kings Crown Royal Fusiliers cap badge with three holes in the slider, although the other ranks quality badge is gilded and not sealed as such presumably. |

This is what 54Bty had to say,on 08-02-09, about the hole in the slider. The subject was why hole in slider of 3rd Carabiniers badge.
The hole is a manufacturers mistake, it was used in the sealed pattern for the attachment of the tape that held the badge to the card and wax seal. As manufacturers were told to produce the badge as per the pattern they did complete with hole. Later on an instruction was added to the pattern card that the hole was not to be included. Jo

I have looked at lots of badges attached to the sealed cards at both the NAM and IWM but I don't think I have seen any sliders with holes in (unless they are modern ones).
I had assumed therefore that they were an aid to sewing them to the headpiece - such as a side cap or a beret - neither of which were conducive to retain a slider in a fixed opposition ! Another solution was to use the slider 'clip' introduced in 1940. Incidentally you are mistaken about 'other ranks quality badge ... and not sealed'. 'Sealed' here means 'authorised' and in the case of your Worcester Regt badge it was 'sealed' on 20th April 1923 as Pattern 3736/1923. |

I mean the RF badge may be "sealed" as it has holes in the slider. The badge is of other ranks quality but it is gilded, which seems unlikely to have been an authorised finished for an OR's badge.
I'll start a thread on it. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=61793 Last edited by leigh kitchen; 08-05-17 at 07:12 PM. Reason: Link added. |

And a thanks button for that, an interesting little locking device.

Makes you wonder if some of the badge sliders with a hole originally had a similar locking bar/fitting. Regards, Paul.

Hi
I've had this Connaught Rangers badge for a few years and I've always just assumed it was done by the soldier to help fasten it to his cap? It looks like a rough, selfdone job to me, with obvious marks at the end of the slider. Cheers Colin

Hole seems to be regular on Worcestershire Badge and would not be necessary made by soldiers
Never seen any others holes in sliders. Sometimes it is still possible to found some broken sliders on Dunkirk's beaches... |
