Default 26th Hussars

I have this trial 26th Hussars collar badge which is gilded on the front but bronze OSD on the back. Were these gilded on the front to be worn on the FSC? Denis

Hi Denis,

Good grief, this is only the third example of this trial pattern collar I know of, and I own the other two.

In short, this pattern was not adopted for wear, nor are there any known officers' trial version collars other than in bronze, at least to date.

Therefore, I can only suggest your example is with the remnants of the bronze coating on the reverse, an OSD collar that has been polished to the bronze base metal.

Best,

Marcus

Hi Marcus,
Amazing! So we have something in common! I had no idea it was so scarce and I think you are right about the bronze being polished off - it is a beautiful gilt colour underneath so that it looks gilded. If it was never worn, how many of these do you think were ever made? Thank you for showing me yours to compare with. This has made my day! Regards Denis

Yes, I believe it to be an exceptionally scarce collar badge, and I am excited to see your example, Denis.

In respect of the trial pattern production numbers, I have read several suggestions over the years. Hence, if I were to hazard a guess, it would be in very low double figures for each unadopted trial pattern die.

Best,

Marcus
