Default RA plastic Grenades

Hello,

I have seen these worn on various headdress but were they actually a collar badge adapted for headdress.

Were they ever worn in pairs on collars?

regards

Default RA plastic grenades

No, never collar badges as they were not officially worn on BD during wartime. They were produced as the headdress badge for all RA units, replacing the 'gun' badge. The plastic gun badge was only worn by mounted RHA units, who still wore a forage cap with peak.

If you want Chapter & verse on the ACI etc. come back to me- I think I have the info somewhere.

Stephen.

Stephen,

Thanks for clearing that up.

Can I please take you up on your offer of "chapter & Verse" I would be very interested in reading it.

On 09.06.41. the WO sent a telegram to all Commands 'RA cap badge will be of the 'grenade' type. Collar badge (Catalogue CB 0520, cost 11/2d each) will be utilised for this service. Cap badges of the 'gun' type (Catalogue CB 0289) already in possession will continue to be worn until unserviceable, and no complete change over by units to the new badge will be permitted. No objections will be raised to both types of badge being worn in any one unit.'
This was followed on 26.06.41. when Army Orders refers to above, permitting retention of 'gun' badge for horsed units wearing 'Cap SD Stiff'.

Rgds, Thomas.

OMG,

I had no idea I had asked that before. What an idiot.

However it seems to contradict this post in that the consencus on the previous one is that they WERE intended as collars.

The plot thickens.

It does show though, we shouldn't always accept the first answer we are given. Keep digging, new information sometimes comes to light.

With reference to the article by Marcus Cotton, it does specifically state;

Collar badge (grenade)

(for field service cap and officers service dress collar)

666,232 pairs

I hope this is of some help?

Andy

Was, nt the small grenade (collar) the badge of choice for the side cap! the larger Gunn and Carriage type being too big for this type of headdress! Though granted smaller versions where out there but not in the profusion of the larger type, these would have been of an ideal size but limited number and said collars sitting around doing nothing it makes sense to use these a substitute! Just a thought all the best billy
