Default Windsor Grammar School badge

Does anyone have any information on this badge? Windsor Grammar School was not an OTC. The badge shown is not the same as the school badge either: http://www.theroyalwindsorwebsite.co...drangle800.jpg. There was a CCF raised post WW2 so it's candidate for the CCF but unlikely.

I've emailed a cousin who I think was a pupil and possibly a cadet-badge might be from before is time though. It looks a badge more generally Royal Berkshire related. There is the Harte and Garter hotel in Windsor. Regards, Paul.

Thanks. It looks like something worn on a council or hotel livery rather than a cap badge. As the school did not have an OTC and the badge does not match the school insignia I am dubious it is cadet related. The school badge does have a set of antlers in it but that is as far as the resemblance goes.

Fattorini did make military badges but had a huge variety of civilian badges as that was their primary market.

Yes- Hart and Oak tree have related to Berkshire for some time. http://abcounties.com/flags/2014/01/28/berkshire-2/
I would have expected to see an image of the castle on a badge. Regards, Paul.

It's funny you mention as the school cap looked like this one. There is a deer but no tree and there is a castle. I have established that the school did have a cadet corps in WW2 as they get a mention here: http://www.theroyalwindsorwebsite.co...heSoldier.html

This was Faringdon County GS

Amazing what's on the net: Youtube : Allenby Aka Lord Allgiby (1929) 1929 Windsor County School cadet corps being inspected by Allenby. They are wearing Berkshire Regiment cap badges. Rather unsurprisingly they were affiliated to the Berkshire Regt as one of their cadet coys. http://digital.nls.uk/british-milita...chive/88784479

My cousin was in the school CCF 1960-1966. He does not recognise the badge on ebay. He thinks the school used the Royal Berks cap badge in that period. When he can he will see if he can find a picture to confirm. Only just after the amalgamation so perhaps possible? Regards, Paul.

It's more than possible: it's highly likely as they were a cadet corps of that regiment before WW2.

Lots of cadets continued to wear badges that were obsolete in the Regular Army so it sounds like his memory is right. Also the Berkshire TA wore the Berkshire cap badge when the Regulars were wearing the Wessex Wyvern 1958-68. The DERR badge was a collar until then when it became a cap badge.

My cousin now confirms cap badge in early-mid '60s was Royal Berkshire Regiment badge. Regards, Paul.

Thanks. As they were a Berks cadet coy in the 1930s then I think that makes it highly probable that the badge on ebay is not for them. £65 saved!

Thank you. Pretty conclusive that they wore the Berkshire Chinese Dragon.

It would appear that this is a badge that mirrors the design used by Berkshire County Council before its formal acquisition of arms in 1947.

I had considered whether it might be contender for Berkshire County cadets 1930-2 but Hansards contains a Parliamentary discussion suggesting the Berkshire cadets were to be disbanded when funding was withdrawn.

Well there's another one sold as the school badge. The lugs are not right for a normal school cap and it's not an OTC or CCF badge so I am at a loss as to who wore it if it was not Corporation or similar. It's clear that the heraldry is for Berkshire County.

It's quite small so possibly a collar.
