what on earth is this?
Dear forum
Just acquired a tin of medals, badges and buttons and this strange item? I am hoping somebody on the forum may be able to identify it and explain its purpose? As you can see the canister has a seal making it air/water tight the base is stamped with a war dept. Arrow EPD and a a crown above A7 Thanks in advance for any help? Paul |

If I remember rightly the SLR, when I joined in 1969 also had these in the wooden butt of the rifle.

My recollection of the SLR oil bottle was that it was contained in the cleaning kit tin.

Mine was, as Eddie suggested, in the cleaning tin with the pull through and 4 by 2 etc but it was in the ' dark ages ', 1960 - 1962 ??? Dave.

As every body has said that it is an oil bottle for the Lee Enfield,
my Dad told me that when they had to go on parade they would remove the oil bottle and pull through, and put small stones in the butt, so when they hit the butt it made a lot more of a cracking sound. Terry |

I had several of these at one time in brass and some in black plastic, I had to sell my old militaria collection when I was made homeless, just kept the badges, I got very little for them but didnt realise what exactly they were. Wish I had been able to keep them, they were all from veterans house clearances, one was found with the complete kit and some ammunition, my boss took them to the police station.

Dave,
I am surprised that I can remember what an oil bottle was never mind what colour or where it was stored. It is not an object that one thinks of very often. Hope you are keeping well. Eddie |
