Default 24th Foot Officers Shako Plate

Hi All
Can anyone tell me if this plate looks good or not? I have never seen one up close. This has a good fire-gilt finish but without trying to remove the sphinx I can't tell if it is silver or not.
Thanks in advance. Cheers,
Alex

Default I have my doubts

Hi Alex
Sorry to strike a discordant note re your Officers 24th Foot "Last Shako" plate but, for a number of reasons, I am not quite convinced of its authenticity :
As always, it is difficult to tell just from looking at your excellent pics, but, to begin with, the fixing lugs at the back of the garter are incorrect. For officers, the lugs are placed EW on the wreath. Also, officers badges were more finely struck in copper and fire-gilded on the front only. I'm afraid the gilding on yours does not look "crisp" enough to me to be "fire-gilt", also the badge itself appears to be brass and, as already mentioned, the lugs too are placed as for an ORs badge.
Again, I'm afraid copies of these "Last Shako" plates seem to be getting more and more prolific these days (as indeed are the PT glengarry badges) and I have to say that some look pretty convincing at first sight as the faker's skills increase.
The 24th Foot seem to be particularly targeted for obvious reasons I suppose.
So, if you happen to know any accredited experts in this field, I should take your badge along to them for a second opinion Alex as I am not too optimistic about this one. Sorry. Best regards. Jeff

Hi Jeff
Thanks for the reply. Not a bit deal, it was worth getting just to see if I'd struck the jackpot.
Cheers,
Alex
